Disguise

We mock burdens
we cannot bear. And pains
we cannot fathom. We
coat them in feathers and
oversized shoes.

Substitute their wails with hunks,
their tears with fresh maple syrup.
Their sniffs with cymbals and their grunt
with drum rolls. This they… we have done
to give our hearts reason.
Reason to not break up
like thundered rocks
that rumble under
the failing earth
or break up like
the heart,
crushed
by the absent love.

Why do we mock such a heart?
Isn’t it just our attempt
to disguise the pain
we are flooded with?
